Five things #22

Every Wednesday I share five things I liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s five things…

  1. "If you can learn it, it's a skill. If it's important, but innate, it's a talent." The difference between what is a skill and what is a talent is often lost or confused. As Seth Godin succinctly explains here, there is a difference and it's an important one.

  2. The idea of being too inspired, isn't one you probably entertain too often. But seeking out inspiration versus actually doing original work is a fine balance. This is a great post on the topic by Jason Fried — "Don’t be influenced too much. Be aware of what’s great, but don’t get other people’s work too deep in your head or you’ll be doing their work, not yours."

  3. Much to the annoyance of my brother I've watched this several times. — Monty Python’s Argument Sketch performed by two vintage speech synthesizers.

  4. This year I've really embraced the idea of sharing more of my work and ideas for free (here's one example of that). There are obviously pros and cons associate with this, but for me, I think the upsides far outweigh the downsides. Using photography as an example, these articles both make a great case for sharing more, rather than less.

  5. Earlier this week I finished reading Sam Harris' book Free Will. It's a mind blowing book and I highly recommend it. The audiobook read by Sam is particularly good.

Five things #21

Every Wednesday I share five things I liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s five things…

  1. I really dislike having to own a car. I CANNOT wait for the time when I won't have to own one, and luckily for me it looks that time might not be too far away.

  2. 12 Kinds of Kindness: A 12-step experiment designed to open our hearts, eyes, and minds — A cool project by designers Jessica Walsh (who I mentioned a couple of weeks ago) and Timothy Goodman.

  3. Aimed at photographers, but applicable to other domains, this is a great guide to producing more original and creative work by Death To Stock Photography.

  4. I can't remember if I've shared this here before, but even if I have it's worth watching again. Wintergatan's Marble Machine uses 2000 marbles to make music — Martin Molin is a very smart guy!

  5. Clouds Over Sidra — Everyone should watch this short film. It's a very powerful and moving virtual reality tour of the Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan (home to 130,000 Syrians, 50% of which are children). There is so much hate and negativity towards refugees in the media, let's not forget they are people too.

Five things #19

Every Wednesday I share five things I liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s five things…

  1. I'm a big fan of The Oatmeal Comics and this one, How To Be Perfectly Unhappy, is my new favourite. I really like this one too.

  2. I've been following Jessica Walsh of design firm Sagmeister & Walsh on Instagram for quite a while ago but recently discovered her #creativestyleandvoice and #jessicasamamondays posts. If you consider yourself to be a 'creative type' (or want to be!) they are worth checking out.

  3. I'd been on the hunt for a decent water bottle that didn't leak everywhere for quite a while (though not very hard!) and last week stumbled across GiveMeTap. For every bottle that is purchased, 20% goes towards building water pumps in Africa. It's a pretty cool idea and is hopefully making a real difference. You can learn more about their projects here or grab yourself a bottle (with a little discount) here.

  4. I've listened to this song by Du Blonde probably close to 20 times in the last two days. The first minute doesn't do much for me but the last minute is so great. Samuel T. Herring's vocals make the song for me. Pretty epic. (You can now make that close to 25 times).

  5. Derek Sivers hits the nail on the head again. — Why are you doing?

Five things #18

Every Wednesday I share five things I liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s five things…

  1. I agree with pretty much everything in this article. ‘Streaming exclusives’ are really not good for fans and surely not a good long term strategy if they end up driving people back to torrenting music.

  2. I love this Hugh Laurie quote.

“It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.”

  3. Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church’ was one of my favourite pop songs (I use that term loosely!) from last year. I’d completely forgotten about this music video featuring the dancer Sergei Polunin. He’s an incredible dancer and a fascinating guy

  4. I really enjoyed this conversation on the Invention Of Photography from Radio 4’s In Our Time. It’s not something I’d spent much time thinking about but a really interesting topic. This History Of Photography In 40 Photos is pretty cool too.

  5. I’m nearly always focused on learning something new (more on my current learning projects here). I’m currently working my way through CreativeLive’s excellent Fundamentals of Digital Photography course. If you are into photography (like me) I highly recommend it. Every CreativeLive course I have done has been well worth the money, it’s a brilliant resource.

Five things #17

Every Wednesday I share five things I’ve liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s five things…

  1. An interactive timeline of popular songs from 1958-2016. Pretty cool!

  2. I love ambient music (Brian Eno, A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Stars Of The Lid) and what do you get when you slow down Windows start-up sounds 4000%? Something that sounds remarkably like ambient music!

  3. It’s so easy to be critical or mean.. I’m sure Wendy MacNaughton’s list will come in handy!

  4. A great post by Chris Dixon on the future of technology. Start now — “There has never been a better day in the whole history of the world to invent something. There has never been a better time with more opportunities, more openings, lower barriers, higher benefit/ risk ratios, better returns, greater upside than now. Right now, this minute. This is the moment that folks in the future will look back at and say, ‘Oh, to have been alive and well back then!’”

  5. A deeply moving episode of Radiolab. Well worth listening to and reflecting on — “When people are dying and you can only save some, how do you choose? Maybe you save the youngest. Or the sickest. Maybe you even just put all the names in a hat and pick at random. Would your answer change if a sick person was standing right in front of you?”
