Five Things #76

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. On Monday astronomers announced that they had witnessed the collision of two dead stars. Mind-blowing stuff. This sentence describing those dead stars is more than a little mind bending: "... neutron stars are full of stuff, matter packed at the density of Mount Everest in a teaspoon."

  2. More priceless wisdom from Seth Godin: The engine of our discontent. If you haven't subscribed to his daily newsletter, you should consider it. It's a gold mine.

  3. I'm really looking forward to reading Walter Isaacson's new book on Leonardo Di Vinci. His book on Benjamin Franklin was excellent. Tim Ferriss interviewed Walter on his podcast last week. If you're curious about the book, it's a good place to start. Tim Ferriss is a great interviewer.

  4. Who'd have thought videos of lane-modifying machines could be so interesting. Saying that, I'm pretty sure the folks at 99% Invisible could make anything interesting!

  5. This week's music recommendation is Rafael Anton Irisarri's latest album The Shameless Years. Rafael is one of favourite ambient/ drone composers. He writes great music to think or work to (exactly like I'm doing right now!).

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. I tend to avoid playing games on my phone but Really Bad Chess is really good.

  2. Tim Ferriss interviewed Sir Richard Branson on his podcast. Such an inspiring guy.

  3. Google has built the Babel Fish!

  4. An awesome collection of photos from National Geographic's Nature Photographer of the Year contest.

  5. This week's musical recommendation is Overture by Hidden Orchestra (from their album Archipelago). The song will take you on quite a journey!

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. Are you as open-minded as you think you are?

  2. Last week Elon Musk proposed a means of travelling anywhere on Earth... by rocket (of course!) and announced revised plans for making life multi-planetary. His ambition and vision never disappoints!

  3. An interesting read on the effects of fiction on the brain.

  4. How to say no to someone you despise.

  5. This week's music recommendation is Garden Dog Barbeque from GoGo Penguin's album v2.0. I've had this album on a near constant loop the last couple of days, it's just so good!

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. How a recording studio mishap shaped '80s music.

  2. It's never easy picking a band name: Bands Named After Other Bands’ Lyrics

  3. This conversation between Shane Parrish and Adam Grant on Shane's podcast, The Knowledge Project, was fantastic. So many great ideas and so much wisdom!

  4. If Soren Kierkegaard worked in advertising: Existential Ad Agency.

  5. This week's music recommendation is Wanderlust by Wild Beasts. On Monday Wild Beasts announced that they're splitting up, which I'm a little gutted about. They wrote some great indie tunes!

ps. I'm playing at the Owl Sanctuary in Norwich on Thursday with Leaone. Come along if you're in town!

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. Are you the proud owner of lots of brilliant musical ideas? You might want to listen to this...

  2. Watching a video on how the economy works probably doesn't sound like a fun use of your time. This video, however, explains a pretty dull topic in a fun and digestible way. I enjoyed it.

  3. NASA's Cassini mission orbiting Saturn came to an end last Friday. Neil deGrasse Tyson shared this image to mark the occasion. What a powerful image, it really underlines the importance of perspective.

  4. Freddy Fabris's Rennaisance Series, which features portraits of mechanics in the style of renaissance paintings, is a work of genius. Ridiculous and simultaneously brilliant.

  5. Over the last week, I've had six songs that I'm learning for a few gigs that start next week on an endless loop. This week's musical recommendation is one of those songs — Goldtooth by Leaone. (Ps. If you're from Ipswich, you should definitely see us play at The Smokehouse on 3/11/2017).

Five Things #71

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. A great conversation with Benny Greb (one of my favourite drummers) on the Chocolate Croissants podcast. They talk drumming, music, life and much more. Benny's a fascinating chap.

  2. If you have any doubts about climate change or just care about this planet, this one's for you. Sam Harris interviews Joe Romm on What You Need to Know About Climate Change.

  3. Food for thought: "Ideas can hurt, it’s true. But the worst fate isn’t being troubled by another person’s idea: It’s settling for intellectual and moral stagnation, refusing to ever encounter any ideas besides the ones you currently hold."

  4. I recently read Sarah Manguso's new book 300 Arguments. It's a collection of aphorisms and a quick read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  5. This week's music recommendation is Dawn Of Midi's album Dysnomia. The music slowly evolves as they layering different rhythms over one another. The effect is quite hypnotic.
