Five Things #96

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. What makes the music for the Mario games sound so fun? 8-bit Music Theory explains...

  2. This piece is fantastic. I love this bit in particular: “While working ... I suddenly heard a noise and looked up to find Robert Hughes, the art critic of Time magazine, staring at me in disbelief. ‘But you’re Philip Glass! What are you doing here?’ It was obvious that I was installing his dishwasher and I told him that I would soon be finished. ‘But you are an artist,’ he protested. I explained that I was an artist but that I was sometimes a plumber as well and that he should go away and let me finish.”

  3. I hope they never grow up! A game of tag that’s been going for 20+ years.

  4. The behind-the-scenes video of Spike Jonze's HomePod advert is well worth a watch. I totally agree with this: "It’s a delight, in the end, that the magicians decided to reveal their tricks like this—a worthy companion piece to one of the year’s most enchanting productions."

  5. 🎶 Sirimiri — More ambient goodness from the prolific Rafael Anton Irisarri.

Five Things #95

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. I finished reading Tara Westover's memoir Educated last week and somehow forgot to include it. Her story is incredible. It's one of the best things I've read in ages.

  2. BBC Radio 4's In Our Time podcast recently explored the life of Beethoven. I didn't know much about him beyond knowing he went deaf and you know, made some pretty famous music! This was a good introduction to the man behind the music.

  3. Rhythmic displacement is a great tool in the toolkit of any musician. This video shows how Harry Connick Jr. masterfully put it to use to get his audience clapping in the right place. Really impressive!

  4. A great post by Austin Kleon on the importance and role of copying in the learning process.

  5. All eight hours of Max Richter's album Sleep are now on Spotify! Sweet dreams 😴🎶

Five Things #94

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. This recent podcast on tribalism by You Are Not So Smart is excellent and eye-opening. This quote from the podcast notes nicely summarises the big problem underlying Fake News and politics: "Humans value being good members of their tribes much more than they value being correct, so much so that we will choose to be wrong if it keeps us in good standing with our peers."

  2. Seth Godin (I've shared many posts by him here) has a new Podcast called Akimbo. It's really good so far.

  3. Very cool: The Hubble Space Telescope captured two galaxies colliding

  4. Surely you've been wondering about this too: Where did that Nokia theme tune really come from?

  5. I'm really enjoying Frederico Albanese's new album By The Deep Sea. It's fairly minimal, cinematic and rhythmic... Another one for my growing collection of albums for working and thinking!

Five Things #93

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. I loved this fascinating episode of the After-On podcast with David Eagleman. David explains the possibility of expanding the human senses, how we perceive time and much more. Quite hard to summarise in a sentence!

  2. Tardigrades are pretty cool (and tough!).

  3. Reuben Wu is one of my favourite photographers. His long exposures of mountains lit by LED light carrying drones are spectacular.

  4. A made up word from an episode of the Simpsons has made it into the dictionary!

  5. I just rediscovered Modest Mouse's album We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank. I'm pretty sure I'd forgotten they existed, so it was a nice surprise! We've Got Everything is a great tune.

Five Things #92

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. Of course 😂 David Attenborough's 'dulcet tones' have become a U.K. dance sensation

  2. An amazing collection of underwater photos from the Underwater Photographer of the Year competition.

  3. I love this quote from this piece titled Learning How to Think:

"I find for myself that my first thought is never my best thought. My first thought is always someone else’s; it’s always what I’ve already heard about the subject, always the conventional wisdom. It’s only by concentrating, sticking to the question, being patient, letting all the parts of my mind come into play, that I arrive at an original idea. By giving my brain a chance to make associations, draw connections, take me by surprise."

  4. When is the best time to drink coffee? Here's your answer.

  5. One of my favourite albums, For Now I Am Winter by Ólafur Arnalds, was 5 years old on Sunday. Here's one of my favourite tracks from the album. The album's title feels especially appropriate given the current weather!
