Five Things #174

Every Tuesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. Snarky Puppy play NPR’s Tiny Desk! Such a great band and quite amazing they managed to fit them all in to the studio. Nice mini-lesson on polyrhythms at 8m 20s — Snarky Puppy: Tiny Desk Concert

  2. Steve Lamacq interviews Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters. I find it very inspiring when such an accomplished musician is so humble about what they can and can't do. — Taylor Hawkins Drumming Masterclass

  3. An excellent episode of the Pessimist Archive podcast on recorded music — Recorded Music

  4. In an increasingly polarised world how do you tell truth from lies and fact from fiction? The University of Washington have an excellent video series (available for free online) that will help you do just that — Calling Bullsh*t

  5. Spotify served up tracks from a couple of albums that I hadn't listened to in quite a while yesterday. I'd loosely describe them both as indie pop/rock. Both are well worth a listen — Premonitions by Miya Folick and Crawl Space by Tei Shi.

Five Things #173

Every Tuesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. Very cool! — Dreamy Cave-Like Photos Taken Inside Musical Instruments

  2. I could do with reminding myself of this more often: "Will today’s emergency even be remembered? Will that thing you’re particularly anxious about have been hardly worth the time you put into it? Better question: What could you do today that would matter a year from now?" — A Year From Now

  3. This is definitely true for me. Podcast listening has completely overtaken music listening — Americans Are Listening to Music Less and Spoken Word Audio More, Study Finds

  4. Amazing footage — The Starling and Falcon Dance

  5. A Winged Victory For The Sullen have returned with a new album. Can't wait to see them play in 2020! — The Undivided Five

That Argos Christmas ad

You may have recently seen the 2019 Argos Christmas advert. It’s a fantastic advert — especially for all the drum tutors out there!

However, if you’re thinking about buying a drum kit this Christmas, skip Argos and speak to the wonderful folks at your local music shop or drum shop (if you’re lucky enough to have one).

I bought my first drum kit at Sound Attak in Colchester many, many years ago. They know their stuff and will be able to sell you a far superior drum set (that will last you far longer) than the one featured in the advert.

An additional shout out to Music World, West End Music and The Drumming Shop in Ipswich. All excellent local music shops.
