Five Things #91

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. I love these hyper-realistic portraits by Emanuele Dascanio.

  2. More wisdom from Derek Sivers (everything he writes is fantastic): Rock stars have a boss?

  3. A student at Oxford University captured a photo of a single atom with a normal camera.

  4. The best Rube Goldberg machine I've seen... and it only took 3 months to make!

  5. I'm going to shut up about Nils Frahm after today's post. But as I'm seeing him play at the Barbican on Friday he can have one more mention! In this mini-documentary by Crack Magazine (only 12 minutes long), Nils talks about his creative process, his new studio and performs Sunson from his latest album.

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. This is a little mindblowing. Those strawberries aren’t red!

  2. Yesterday, as I ate my dinner I watched SpaceX launch its massive Falcon Heavy rocket for the first time. And now there is a red Tesla Roadster flying around in space! Quite incredible, what a time to be alive. Make sure you check out the photos and videos.

  3. The glasses of the future? I’m not sure whether I’d actually want these or want to have a conversation with someone who’s wearing them. But saying that, I once said that I’d never want an iPhone…

  4. Science says willpower is overrated. Now what?

  5. Nils Frahm’s new album All Melody is out and it’s REALLY good.

That's all for this week. If you enjoyed it, subscribe and you'll get the next one delivered to your inbox.

ps. There'll be no Five Things next week as I'll be on holiday. But fear not, Five Things will return the following week!

Five Things #61

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. I know you've been thinking this too... Where are all the aliens?

  2. Do you want to be more creative? Try pretending you're someone else"Creativity is not an individual trait, but a 'malleable product of context and perspective.' Everyone can be creative, as long as they feel like creative people".

  3. Self-healing clothes? Self- healing electronics? How about a self-healing Wolverine-like artificial skin? Researchers at the University of California, Riverside might have a fabric to make just the thing.

  4. I really like this advice from Charlie Munger: "I constantly see people rise in life who are not the smartest, sometimes not even the most diligent, but they are learning machines. They go to bed every night a little wiser than they were when they got up and boy does that help, particularly when you have a long run ahead of you." Are you a learning machine?

  5. In the past week I've booked tickets to see two of my favourite musicians play shows in London. So this week's musical recommendation is a track by each of them. St Vincent performing Black Rainbows and Nils Frahm performing Toilet Brushes - More. Can't wait to see them both live again!

Five Things #49

Every Wednesday I share five things I liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. Last week SpaceX made history by successfully reusing a rocket which had already been up into to space. Here's a video explaining the significance of the launch.

  2. An interesting read on the potential impacts of electric cars and self-driving cars on our lives and on the places we live. Towns and cities are going to look quite different when people shift from owning cars to just hiring one when they need a ride. It just wouldn't make financial sense to own one when it's capable of driving itself. You could book one when you need it, and once you've reached your destination the car could then move on to the next customer. Any cars that aren't in use could then park in less congested areas outside of towns or cities where the land is cheaper. That would then result in the freeing up of a lot of land in cities that's currently used for parking cars... As you can probably tell, I find all of this rather fascinating!

  3. These are pretty cool... Crushed cans in the style of Ming Dynasty ceramics by the Chinese sculptor Lei Xue.

  4. Food for thought from Seth Godin, how are you using your attention?

  5. In honour of Piano Day (which was last Wednesday), this week's musical recommendation is a piece called Hammers by one of my favourite pianists, Nils Frahm.

Five things #9

Here are the five things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the football, but yesterday I found myself listening to one Iceland's greatest exports Sigur Rós and their fantastic album Kveikur.

  2. "What Is A Polyrhythm? — Beats Taking Turns" — Short video (less than 3 mins) with a graphic showing the polyrhythms... Very cool!

  3. Nils Frahm on reinventing classical music: “I like to treat the establishment like a cushion... I don’t throw it out of the window, but I like to shake the dust off it. I want to expand what it can be.”

  4. Can we change who we are? One of my favourite podcasts, Invisibilia, returns with an exploration of personality.

  5. Seth Godin is an incredibly wise man. I read his blog pretty much every day and Sunday's post was poignant given all the political goings on this past week.
