Five Things #143

Every Tuesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. More moving, less sitting.

  2. An interesting piece on Garageband and it's influence on modern music.

  3. I just finished reading Doing Good Better by Will MacAskill. It's an interesting book on effective altruism and how to guard against good intentions leading to bad outcomes when giving to charity (etc!). I highly recommend it.

  4. What a clever and helpful little mouse. I wish he'd come around and tidy up my office.

  5. I think I've shared this here before but I'm sharing it again. Nils Frahm's Encores 2 EP is really great.

Five Things #142

Every Tuesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. You've probably heard the BBC news theme before. Here's a short glimpse of the musicians behind the music! And here's another video explaining how the theme was made.

  2. A great video from Kurzgesagt explaining the origins of consciousness. Is there anything they can't explain?

  3. Seth Godin on the trap of early feedback.

  4. This is very cool and clever. Scroll down to see the photos. Technology these days! — Bringing black and white photos to life using Colourise.sg

  5. I'd forgotten how much I love this song, The Grass by the Roses by Girls in Airports. I could listen to it on a loop all day.

Five Things #141

Every Tuesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. A great little trick for working out percentages. Why didn't anyone tell me this before?

  2. What to say when you don't know what to say. I'm sure this will come in handy.

  3. It's hard to be happy about being a meat-eater after watching this. 😢

  4. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on why we should be excited that robots might be coming for our jobs: "We should be excited about automation, because what it could potentially mean is more time educating ourselves, more time creating art, more time investing in and investigating the sciences, more time focused on invention, more time going to space, more time enjoying the world that we live in. Because not all creativity needs to be bonded by wage." I'm fully behind this version of our future! She makes a number of excellent points.

  5. I absolutely love these. 80s style LP covers featuring 80s versions of today's pop stars.

Five Things #140

Every Tuesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. A compelling account of the benefits of breaking up with your phone.

  2. This guy has some serious finger drumming skills, not sure about the weird arm folding thing though!

  3. Apple has announced the winners of its Shot on iPhone Challenge and they've selected some great photos. It's quite incredible how good the tiny little cameras on phones are getting and how far they've come in the last 10 years.

  4. A cool visualisation showing how the US population grew and expanded from 1790 up to 2010.

  5. I hadn't thought about this song, You're Out by Dead Disco, in years until it randomly popped into my head yesterday. The singer of Dead Disco went on to become Little Boots, a fact I'd also forgotten until about 5 minutes ago!

Five Things #139

Every Tuesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. This is fun: The British-Irish Dialect Quiz — I was delighted to find my results showed no trace of my early years in Lincolnshire!

  2. A great interview with Patrick Collison on the Tim Ferriss Show. Patrick is a fascinating and very smart chap.

  3. So, you mean to say cats aren’t psychopaths?

  4. A long read on how augmented reality will lead to the next big technology platform, an online world that precisely mirrors the world around us. Like Google Earth but for everywhere and everything in ultra high definition.

  5. This is pretty cool. Bees can learn how to play an insect version of football simply by watching another bee play it. Those are some clever bees!
